Two rivers - Messiani fountain

The next stop on our route is the point where the two rivers are located.

It is a key landmark for the inhabitants of the area because this is where the Permissos River meets the stream coming from Episkopi.

The cistern you see was built for the operation of the water mill of Messiani Fountain.

This point was also a meeting place for the people of the area as this was where the women washed their clothes and the boys had a pleasant time swimming. This place is a beneficial retreat. For excursionists it is a wonderful place for a picnic.

If you pass by the Messiani Fountain with its very good water, remember that this water is associated with a special system of hydromastering (qanat).

In this watermill, opposite the Fountain, the following inscription was found walled in:

The sacred head of
Herodes is covered by the
earth; / but his soul
holds the tenth place
among the Muses.

These words refer, in all probability, to Herodes Atticus, who, in addition to the wealth he inherited from his parents, earned even more here by fishing in Hyllica and pasteurising the fish with Alyki salt, which he then sent to Rome via the Corinthian Gulf.
